A Rebuke From the Tarot

Certain researchers into the Paranormal believe that it is the subconscious that plays the leading role in the world of unexplained events. It is undoubtedly a powerful resource and its limits are essentially unknown. I personally believe that we access the subconscious whenever we use any form of Divination to delve into the future.

As a young man I used to treat predictive systems as amusements and played with the Tarot in order to test it. My cards were designed by Aleister Crowley and are known as the Egyptian Thoth deck. Strangely, I first experienced these beautifully designed cards during an out-of-body-experience. They were introduced to me as doorways and a wise soul encouraged me to enter through them to view segments of Egyptian prehistory. I was stunned to recognise them some months later when they were first released and on display in a city book shop. I began to use them while I was still living with my parents which engendered much disapproval as they often wondered whether I was doing the devils work. My question at that time related to marriage and who my prospective partner might be.

We lived in a large Victorian house and I was lucky enough to have my own room downstairs to entertain my friends in. This was also my inner-sanctum for reading the cards. I had asked my question on a number of occasions and had received my answer accordingly. The woman that I was destined to marry was continually shown as the Queen of Cups which I intuitively took to be a Cancerian card but being a researcher I proceeded to repeat the reading. This went on until one fateful night which found me spreading the deck yet again with the same query in mind. For some unknown reason I stopped what I was doing in mid-flow and left my room to go and stand for a while in the unlit front sitting-room of the house. Unbeknown to me my mother had kindly decided to make a cup of coffee for me and bring it into my room. She stood there with coffee in hand wondering where I had disappeared to when I unwittingly re-entered the room behind her. Needless to say, the cup and saucer left my startled mothers hand and somersaulted into the air before landing on the coffee table and my stack of cards. I wiped them down quickly but the back of one card out of seventy-eight, which was situated in the middle of the deck, peeled. I am sure that you can guess which card this was. Incidentally, within six months I met my cancerian lady and in the most unusual circumstances. We have just celebrated thirty years of marriage.

You may dismiss this as simple coincidence except for the fact that this was only the first rebuke of its kind. The I-Ching contains a Hexagram entitled Youthful Ignorance which holds a message for those who overstep its hospitality. I know as I have received it once or twice!

For those of you that are intrigued by certain aspects of this tale I will provide further details in follow up articles.
